Why Dusshera celebration is important

India is known as a land of festivals and celebrations. Dussehra and Diwali are the two amazing festivals in India. Dusshera festival continues for ten days and Dussehra is on the tenth day. All Hindu festivals have its’ own story and are related to great epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata and Dussehra is one of the main ones. It is said that the 10 days war between Lord Ram and Ravana went on during these 10 days and Ravana was killed by Ram on the tenth day.
Dussehra is also called Vijayadashami and is celebrated as victory of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahisasura. Dussehra festival comes in the month of September or October. In fact, the main message that it represents the victory of good over the bad and the success of truth over lies.
Significance of Dussehra Festival
The Dussehra festival has its own significance. According to the great Hindu epic Ramayana, Lord Ram killed Ravana on the tenth day which is called Dussehra. It is a triumph of virtue over sin. Ravana is said to have abducted Ram’s wife, Sita. The death of Ravana meant end of evil spirit. Throughout Navratri, Ramleela is organised in many parts of the country and people enjoy the performance of the play based on Ramayana story. The festival of Dussehra is also known as Durga Pooja and in eastern India people worship Goddess Durga all the nine days and celebrate Dussehra as on that day the demon Mahisasura was killed by the Goddess. While in Gujarat, men and women gather and dance every night of the Navratri and shows are organised on this occasion. Garba is done by them. Women in their best of attires surround beautifully decorated earthen pots. They dance, sing and enjoy till late night. In many places Garba starts late at night and continue till dawn. No matter what the stories are, in India festivals convey the message of peace and love. If the people kept in mind the beautiful and meaningful messages throughout the year, it would have been peace, Love, Unity, truth and harmony all around. It gives us courage to fight for our right, no matter how poor the situation seems to be.
However, in India festivals are celebrated by all Indians, regardless of being a Hindu or belong to any other religion. Spirit of brotherhood is seen during festival seasons among the people.
